Claire Carter Garden Designer in Somerset – Testimonials

Claire has been looking after our garden for three years now, and I honestly don’t know where we’d be without her.
Claire really listened to our requirements from the outset, and was keen to make the garden work for us as a family. This has included; building raised beds on redundant space outside our kitchen so we can grow our own vegetables; establishing a hedge around the perimeter of the garden to afford us more privacy; removing and disposing of several dead trees; even building a wigwam for the children! She has always communicated with us effectively and keeps us in the loop about what she’s working on. She never presumes, and is always ready with suggestions if needed, without being pushy.
Our garden covers about an acre, over several different levels. When Claire first started working on it, she labeled several areas ‘bramble world’, and not without reason. These areas were all cleared, and beautiful plants put in their place. At the same time, however, much of our garden is very established. Claire was highly sympathetic to existing trees and plants, and worked hard to give them space to breathe and flourish. Since getting the garden up to scratch, Claire attends to it weekly, and maintains the garden beautifully.
Claire is honest, efficient, friendly and trustworthy. She is also extremely good at what she does. I would not hesitate to recommend her.

My clients dream was to create an oasis of calm and tranquility out of a barren expanse of earth and scrubland. We went about the mammoth task of removing stones and weeds throughout  the garden, and removal of dozens of leylandii stumps over 60 in total ! the garden at last had started to take shape. we then went about establishing a sweeping lawn and built some raised sleeper beds for the kitchen garden area as our client is a keen vegetable grower. when we started  it was a totally blank canvas upon which we could gradually add colour and form and create a haven for the flora and fauna. The Planting of this garden was on a grand scale we established a shady woodland walk that edged along the boundary of the garden and alongside a stream that ran through the garden. Trees and seasonal bulbs were then planted throughout giving colour and interest throughout all seasons.

Claire worked for us at our Farmhouse Garden just outside Chew Stoke, for four years from 2009  until  2013 when we sold the house.  In the sixteen years we lived there we had employed a number of different gardeners and Claire was by far the best.  She had responsibility for a garden of about 2 acres and was required to look after a parterre at the front of the house, some large herbaceous borders, to clip and maintain a long yew hedge and  hedging around a tennis court, look after raised vegetable beds and a soft fruit cage, to prune climbing roses and a rose arch and oversee planting around a pond.  Claire brought her skilled maintenance team to re turf a large piece of waste ground and carry out Tree work around the woodland area. All tasks as and when required were carried out promptly and efficently.
Claire is extremely reliable and pleasant.  She is thorough, neat and tidy in her work, planned tasks and maintenance well ahead, and was  proactive in preventing pest/blight. Claire has a good knowledge of plants,  and always went out of her way to ensure that the garden always looked as good as possible. Had we not moved ( to Devon )  when we did, we would still employ her and I have no hesitation in recommending her

Myself and my team first built the fence which formed the framework within which the garden could be developed. Raised borders were constructed using wood and stone in harmony with the surroundings and local to the Somerset area.

[During]

Flowers, shrubs and trees were then selected and planted, resulting in a backdrop of colour and texture within the secret paths, hidden hideaways and natural stream running throughout the garden.

[After]

The final outcome was an outside area that went beyond the usual country garden. A contemporary garden which offered a myriad of different uses: reflection, meditation, tranquility and joy!

We moved into our new home in wells over 3 years ago and our garden pretty much resembled a football pitch with grass and a path running straight through up to the gate . We didn’t really have much of a clue as to how to go about making this into a Garden. Claire carter was refereed to us from a friend in the Chew valley and we called her along to show her the Garden.
Claire is very knowledgable when it came to design and helped  us to think about the different things we actually wanted to use our garden for, she made some excellent suggestions most of them we hadn’t really even considered and really helped us to visualise it’s potential.
Initially We commissioned her to draw a plan of the Garden and a planting plan so we could all discuss the types of plants we lwoukd like to see in our garden.
We chose to have espalier pear and apple trees of different types planted on the walls that surround our garden, we also choose to have some raised oak beds to grow our own fruit and vegetables in.
The garden is quite symmetrical and claire suggested we have two large borders running alongside the path, these are now in there 3rd year and look fabulous all year round with bulbs and minutes of different plants.and small groupings of trees .
We had some lovely little patio areas that have been laid in Indian sand stone and a little raised wall that has a Moroccan style seating area with a fire pit that we have been really enjoying this summer.
We love our garden and would recommend her services. Joanna - Wells
